Pullman Wa Sept 7-9 2009 : The annual "rock hunt" on Bald Butte in Pullman WA. On some land Lee Drufflel farms that has some real cool quartzite? like rocks that Anna has received a "Big One" from Jerry her last several birthdays. I had no idea when Anna said rock hunting that we were talking multi, multi hundred pound rocks. I knew something was up when Gregg showed up with a utility trailer and some heavy duty chains and a 5' - 30# pri bar. Jerry, Anna, Sindy & Gregg, Patrick & Carrie, Amie, Connie & I all enjoyed driving through Lee's wheat stubble fields up onto the butte. There were some breath taking vistas of the Palouse every where one looked that you never get tired of seeing. Had a great picnic lunch from food stuffs we bought at the Moscow Farmers market earlier that morning. Was a real treat after straining on those rocks. Look forward to next year! I need Sindy to spit on a few for Connie and me so we can enjoy some of them purty palouse rocks (PPR's) in our yard. Feel free to add comments as you browse. Mark

Imature Goss Hawk May 3rd 2009 : Heard the squawking of the magpies from my shop and when I looked out I thought I saw our calico cat. But it was this beautiful hawk and it had a gopher. There were several magpies harassing the hawk and they wanted that gopher bad. They would sneak up behind the hawk and pull it's feathers and when the hawk turned it's head, one of the others would swoop in and try and grab the gopher. This went on for about 5 minutes. At one point, after finishing it's meal, the hawk saw one of the magpies trying to steal a tidbit of the carnage and it chased the magpie off. It then tried to scare off our metal quail lawn decoration. It looked a bit stunned when the quail didn’t fly away. It Walked around the metal quail, cleaned off it's beak in the grass, fluffed it's feathers, then flew off. WAY TOO COOL. I was surprised to get any decent shots I was shaking so hard.... Mark
